Five times a day, when a worship service is about to begin at one of the mosques, a muezzin (chanter) performs the call to prayer over a PA system. The speakers are attached to the minarets of the mosque, so everyone within a few blocks radius can hear. The call to prayer is a very Eastern-sounding chant that is somewhat eerie yet powerful. I’m not exactly sure what they are chanting, but I know it has something to do with praising Allah and asking Muslims to come to the mosque. Istanbul is home to the world’s oldest shopping mall, called the Grand Bazaar. It is a huge, old building that branches off, winds around, and goes up, down and all around. It has 4000 shops in it. These shops are mainly tiny little nooks that sell both tourist goods and authentic Turkish items such as carpets, lamps, jewelry, clothing, scarves, and ceramics (Turkish people call anything that looks ceramic to us "tiles.").
